Claybourne #58 :: Pawn to Bishop 3
“You have 10 seconds…” - MP3 - 5.5MB - 05min 56sec
Everyone is joking about…but Thompson is really worried, Edith returns to Claybourne with a visitor, Sady has re-organised everything in Ediths absence and Thompson and Karen give Clive a visit.

Okay, the authors of Claybourne definitely need a brush up on their internet tech knowledge ;-) It reminded me so much of Jurassic Park 1. “I know how to use this, it is a UNIX system”. Sigh…

Podcasting, we likes it.
Anytime I take a look at something new I like to find something about it that I can relate to. …

I think it’s likely that the IP address is deliberately invalid in the same way that TV programs use invalid phone numbers.
If you strip off the “Mongolian prefix”, you get 555 5181, which is from the range of fake US phone numbers used in Films and TV. There may even be an in-joke here.

Okay, the in-joke is a possibility… Otherwise, that’s what we have the private ip ranges for. Ohwell, it’s Cinematictech, not supposed to be realistic. I am not gonna argue abou hyperdrives either afterall ;-)

It’s been a while since I visited, and I hadn’t checked the Claybourne messages for so long - it’s gratifying to see that people are actually listening. Much appreciated. And thanks to Cam and Mick for posting the episodes without me having to be involved on a daily basis.
The IP address thing was equal parts clever in-joke and plain old ignorance. Belinda’s a TV writer. The 555 thing was her joke. The IP address was me - but I just wanted it to sound like an IP address, rather than actually BE one.
Remember that the series was written in ‘97 - back when you could still trick people by sounding a bit more technical than they were, without actually having any substance to back it up. I knew some of the terminology, but none of us were anything more than entry level ‘web-surfers’ (90s, remember). Hard to be rigorous and fact-checky when you’re up against what was then a daily show.
I’m still quite pleased with ‘Koestler Industries’ as the biggest in joke of the series. There are actually rather a lot, if you can be bothered to seek them out. In fact, we started going a bit nuts with them as the series progressed.
I’m particularly looking forward to responses to an episode that comes up quite soon… so I think I’ll lurk for now.
Cheers,
Dubber
